Liquid Gypsum for Better Soil Health and Yields

If you farm in Thailand, you’ve probably run into this problem: The soil is salty, compacted, and water just won’t move through it the way it should. Roots struggle. It’s a common issue in Isaan, the Central Plains, and along the coast, and it tends to get worse quietly, over several seasons, until yields drop and nobody’s quite sure why. Growing rice, sugarcane, cassava, or rubber? Then soil condition matters more than most people think. Fertiliser can fix nutrient problems but if the problem is in soil itself, no amount of extra nutrients will fix it. That’s where we come in. Ultimate Agri is an Australian company, 25+ years in the game, and liquid gypsum is one of the main tools we use to bring depleted soil back to life. Our crop solutions are developed to help Australian growers overcome environmental stress, nutrient deficiencies, and poor crop performance. With over 25 years of agricultural experience, we deliver innovative products tailored to the unique needs of Australian farms. Why Thai Soils Need a Different Approach

In many parts of Thailand, soils have high sodium levels and certain places have such high soil salinity that is rendering farming impossible. When sodium builds up, the structure of the soil starts to break down and the clay spreads out which makes the soil dense and difficult for water to pass through. This causes poor drainage, hard soil surface layers and uneven crop growth even when there is enough rainfall or irrigation. Standard fertiliser programs do not fix this because the main issue is not nutrients but the condition of the soil itself.

What Liquid Gypsum Does for Thai Farms

Liquid gypsum works by adding calcium into the soil and this calcium replaces the sodium that is causing the problem. Once the sodium is pushed out, it can be washed away through rain or irrigation which helps the soil return to a better structure. Because it is in liquid form, it moves into the soil faster than granular gypsum and is easier to apply during regular farm operations. This makes it suitable for farms that need consistent and timely application. Ultimate Agri’s liquid gypsum product has been developed from real farming experience. The founder has been growing vegetables since 1983 and built the product range around the issues farmers deal with in the field, not just in theory.

What this means for farmers day to day:

Fewer failed or uneven plantings Liquid Gypsum loosens the soil and facilitates better water movement allowing crops to grow more evenly which reduces the need for replanting. Lower irrigation and fertiliser waste Water and nutrients reach the root zone more effectively instead of staying on the surface which reduces the water and fertiliser wastage. More stable yields Improved soil condition helps crops handle both dry periods and heavy rainfall thus farmers get a better yield. Easy to use with current systems Unlike solid gypsum which should be sprinkled throughout the field, liquid one can be applied through irrigation systems or standard spray equipment which saves farmers cost and time. Long-term improvement Liquid gypsum helps in reduction of soil salinity and hardness, which results in improved structure over time and supports future crop cycles.

Core soil-level benefits:

Improved water infiltration
Liquid Gypsum helps in easing soil compaction and water moves into the soil more effectively instead of running off.
Better root development
With improved soil texture plant roots can go deeper which helps in better nutrient absorption. The result is enhanced crop yields and more benefit to farmers.
Reduced soil crusting
Liquid Gypsum helps crops grow more evenly across the field which means more profit for farmers.
Faster action than granular gypsum
Solid gypsum takes time to dissolve in soil. Liquid form on the other hand allows quicker movement into the soil.
Cost-effective long-term solution
The liquid gypsum helps in fixing the root cause of soil salinity and hardiness instead of repeating short-term fixes.

Crop Solutions Thailand Growers Can Build a Program Around

Liquid gypsum works best as part of a broader soil management plan rather than a one-time application. Along with liquid gypsum we also have products like to form a soil improvement plan:
  • GYP-FLO: A liquid suspension of high grade Sulphur and Calcium which helps in reducing soil salinity and calcium enrichment.
  • Ph-Plus: Also a liquid suspension of Calcium Carbonate to rectify the acidity of soil and calcium levels.
  • DOLOMITE PLUS: Liquid suspension of Calcium and Magnesium which is applied to prevent or improve the acidic soils.
  • CROP BLOCK: Calcium Carbonate suspension which can be applied to prevent or reduce the crop damage due to Sun burn and help grow a plant.

A practical program usually includes:

  1. Soil testing to check salinity and sodium levels before treatment
  2. Application of liquid gypsum prior to planting or early in the growing season
  3. Using additional soil solutions to improve pH and nutrient availability
  4. Monitoring soil condition and repeating application when required

This approach works well across different crops, as rice depends on steady water movement while crops like cassava and sugarcane rely on deeper root systems for consistent growth.

Getting Started with Ultimate Agri for Crop Solutions Thailand

If your soil has a hard surface, drains slowly or crops grow unevenly even after using fertiliser, the issue may be related to soil structure.

Starting with a soil test helps identify the problem and from there a liquid gypsum plan can be developed based on your crop, soil type and irrigation setup.

Ultimate Agri provides support from testing through to application, with a focus on practical results based on real farming experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is liquid gypsum different from the granular type?

It works faster because it's already dissolved, so there's nothing waiting to break down in the soil. It's also easier to apply - you can run it through irrigation or a standard sprayer instead of spreading it by hand across the field.

How much time does it take for results?

That depends on how bad the soil is to start with, plus rainfall and irrigation after you apply it. Some farmers notice better drainage within a few weeks. Full structural improvement, especially in heavily sodic soil, usually takes a full season or two.

Will liquid gypsum work on any type of soil?

It's most useful where sodium is the actual problem - dense, compacted soil that drains poorly. That's why we recommend a soil test first. If salinity and sodium aren't the issue, gypsum won't do much, and your money's better spent elsewhere.

Can I use it alongside my current fertiliser program?

Yes. Gypsum deals with soil structure, not nutrients, so it works alongside your existing fertiliser rather than replacing it. A lot of farmers actually see their fertiliser work better, since it's reaching the roots instead of sitting on hardened topsoil.

How often should I apply it?

It varies by soil condition and crop, which is part of why we start with testing rather than a fixed schedule. Some farms need one application before planting each season. Others, with more severe sodium build-up, need repeat treatments over a year or two before things level out.
