Why Thai Growers Are Turning to Liquid Gypsum ​

Large areas of Thailand’s agricultural land, especially in the Northeast (Isaan) region and low-lying paddy zones face ongoing challenges with salt-affected and sodic soils. 1. What is liquid gypsum and how is it different from regular gypsum?

Liquid gypsum is a concentrated suspension of very fine calcium sulphate particles, typically around 5 microns in size. Because these particles are much smaller than those in bulk gypsum, they dissolve more easily. As a result, crops gain faster access to calcium and sulphur without waiting for large particles to break down.

2. Will liquid gypsum work on sodic and saline soils in Northeast Thailand?

Yes. Liquid gypsum is specifically used for these conditions. The calcium helps displace sodium ions attached to soil particles. This allows sodium to be leached below the root zone through irrigation or rainfall. As a result, soil structure, water movement and root growth all improve.

3. Does liquid gypsum change soil pH?

No. Gypsum is pH-neutral, so it does not raise or lower soil pH. This makes it useful when sodium needs correction without affecting pH levels. If pH adjustment is also required, a lime-based product is usually applied separately.
